Pangaea

The word Pangaea describes the land mass that existed nearly 300 Million years ago, and has obviously since then split apart. Derived from the Greek word pan meaning entire and Gaea meaning earth, the break up itself is today split up into four phases. The first phase was a rift which in turn formed the Atlantic Ocean. In the second phase, Gondawa split up into a few of the continents we still know today. Africa, South America, India, Antarctica, and Australia were all formed in the second phase of Pangaeas seperation. Later, the North American region had also split up to look the way it does today. All of these phases are part of a much grander cycle. It is understood today that Pangaea was not the only supercontinent to exist and that in fact, super continents go apart and together over the course of Earth's history.
